The book I read to research this post was My iPad 2 by Gary Rosenzweig which is a very good book and which I got from kindle.
The ipad 2 is thinner than the ipad but I still think it doesn’t represent good value for money. If you want something that has loads of apps and I think featurewise is the best on the market and also don’t mind paying the apple tax then buy it. It comes in two major versions one with wi-fi and one with 3G. There’s a printer and keyboard available for it which I think are a good investment. There’s facetime which allows you to place a video phonecall to anybody else with a device that has facetime although the number is rather limited. There are some good game apps like monkey island. Having to do a pinching movement with your index finger and thumb to zoom in sounds a bit awkward although there are other ways to zoom in. I would warn you not to get a secondhand one unless you are sure it’s in good condition because if the battery is shot they are expensive to replace.
