The book I read to research this post was WordPress For Beginners which is published by www.imaginebookshop.co.uk and is a very good book that I bought from a local newsagent. This book covers pretty much everything there is to know about WordPress both hosted and self hosted versions. A lot of you will be reading this on my WordPress site so could very well know more than me on this topic. I’ll mention some interesting points in the book which also is around 260 pages so is a reasonable length. It also includes a cd-rom tutorial. One interesting thing is it is possible to embed videos from YouTube & Vimeo in particular although I am sure there are many other video sharing sites which also work. You click on Share and are given some text to copy and paste into your wordpress. For those of you who don’t know you highlight the text select control + c to copy then select your destination for it, place the cursor in the spot and select control + v to paste. You then publish it like you would an article. There is also a section on useful plug-ins so I thought I’d mention some of those. In the ensuring your site works at a mobile level there is a plug-in called WPtouch by http://bravenewcode.com . This ensures it works on things like iPads & smartphones. There is an SEO plug-in for those who want to make sure their posts are search engine friendly called SEO Rank Reporter which is by WordPress. For those of you who want people to share your posts on social media there is Sociable again by WordPress and that has a wide variety of buttons for them to share it. You can have an image gallery with WP Photo Album which is also a plug-in by WordPress. Finally there is a RSS feed plug-in called RSS Digest also by WordPress and that unlike a lot of similar plug-ins doesn’t need any code modified and simply needs to be installed. I may have a look at installing at least some of these plug-ins on my sites. I did really enjoy this book and it does a good job of explaining everything.
